Mackenzie Taylor has continued his winning ways off the track – being presented with the Tom Herschell award (27 March 2008).
 
The award was created in the memory of Tom Herschell who attended the same school as Mackenzie - Sunbury Manor in Surrey - but who sadly died in 2002.
 
Despite being in a wheelchair Tom was an avid sportsman and his family now annually donate the prize to a Sunbury Manor student who has demonstrated sporting excellence.

Sometimes the most minor of things can make the major difference between winning and losing…..
 
That was something Ashford’s Mackenzie Taylor learnt to his cost at the British Open Championship race at the Three Sisters circuit near Wigan yesterday (30 March).
 
The event, known as the ‘O Plate’ – after the number plate awarded to the winner – is one of British karting’s most prestigious titles. And for most of the weekend the Sunbury Manor School pupil looked like he was going to be returning home with the KF3 class title, after taking wins in both heats and the pre-Final.

Mackenzie has rebounded from his disappointment at finishing 2nd in last week’s British Open Championship with a superb victory at the second round of the Winning Series Karting Championship.
 
The win will taste all the sweeter for the young karting star – who celebrates his 15th birthday today (7 April) - after last month’s opening round of the WSK saw him finish down in 19th place, when a start-line accident put him out of the points.
 
Arriving at Angerville - based 50km south of Paris, in a quiet and unassuming part of rural France – Mackenzie knew that he needed a good result if he was going to recover from the first round, and stand a chance for overall honours in the title chase.
 
His weekend started well when he recorded the 5th fastest time in Qualifying – putting him on the front row of the grid for the heats in his group. The RFM driver duly took a 4th, 2nd, 3rd and another 2nd to put himself on P3 for the pre-Final.

Coming just a week after his Winning Series Karting success at Angerville in France (5/6 April), he has clearly marked himself as one of the favourites to take the Super 1 title. In difficult conditions during Timed Qualifying, Mackenzie clocked the 7th fastest time - but admitted to making a costly error: “The guys who recorded quicker times were all slip-streaming one another, but I was out on my own and didn't get a tow.
